Tree Commission Encourages Residents to Donate Trees for Spring Planting

2012-02-10: SPRING IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINKTree Commission Encourages Residents to Donate Trees for Spring PlantingLast year, the Glen Ridge Shade Tree Commission launched the "600 Tree Campaign," an effort to fund the purchase and planting of at least 600 new street trees as soon as possible. The response was positive and in the fall, 41 oaks, gingkos, zelkovias, maackias and disease-resistant elms were installed in various locations around the Borough. Now is the perfect time to prepare for the upcoming planting season by donating to the Campaign and enhancing our streetscape with additional young trees. The storms of 2011 were hard on

trees and the need to replace and augment the tree canopy has never been greater. The re-establishment of the Shade Tree Commission and the launch of the "600 Trees Campaign" is the latest chapter in the Borough's long tradition of stewardship of the tree canopy. At least as far back as the 1930's, town leaders charged the Glen Ridge Tree Department with the task of tending existing trees and planting new ones. Now the Shade Tree Commission has expanded that mission. In its first year of existence, the Commission has authorized a tree inventory, updated the Shade Tree Ordinance and created a new community outreach and awareness campaign.Additional public funding for new trees is limited. To meet the 600 tree goal, the Commission needs immediate help from all residents, local businesses and civic groups. To make a contribution, go to the Commission's website at www.glenridgenj.org/600trees.htm , which contains a simple form and information about suggested donation levels. Those who contribute $250 or more will receive special recognition and can request that a site-appropriate tree be planted in a specific location. .For further information about the Shade Tree Commission, the value of shade trees and the "600 Trees Campaign," go to www.glenridgenj.org/shadetree.htm . To make tree-related requests or report tree damage, e-mail town arborist and NJ Tree Expert Richard Wolowicz at trees@glenridgenj.org or call (973) 748-8400, ext. 202.
