Permits for Retaining Walls

Section 872.0 Retaining Walls. All retaining walls where the difference in finished grade is in excess of two feet six inches (2'6") above the lower level, shall require a building permit and be designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice. Such walls built to retain or support the lateral pressure of earth, water or other superimposed loads, shall be designed and constructed of approved masonry, reinforced concrete, steel sheet piling or other approved materials.
